PRESS RELEASE

The Artists are Living Here

Daphne Knouse & Ada Wickens

Tutu Gallery

August 21 - August 28,2021

Tutu Gallery is excited to announce the opening of The Artists Are Living Here, featuring Daphne Knouse and Ada Wickens. The artists are invited to live at the gallery space while producing new works for the upcoming exhibition opening August 28th, 2021. As the first exhibited artist, Daphne is also returning to Tutu with a new friend, Ada.

Daphne Knouse’s portraits define muted archetypes frozen within their own circumstance, demonstrating postures of violence, intimacy, existential stagnation and connective boredom. They consider the vitality of empty space, interrupted by naive and quietly poignant interaction. Together, these works begin to define a sedated yet cataclysmic psychological landscape.

Through the juxtaposition and displacement of cultural objects and aesthetic signifiers, Ada Wickens’ work examines the tensions between symbology, sense making, iconology, material lyricism, and cultural and visual specificity. These investigations illuminate a shared spiritual and psychospheric anxiety and detachment from the attempt at a post-digital reflexivity.

Daphne and Ada are currently students at RISD where they met and became friends.
